Nigel McLoughlin awarded National Teaching Fellowship

The Higher Education Academy has awarded University of Gloucestershire Reader Dr Nigel McLoughlin a prestigious financial award in recognition of his individual excellence as an educator. The National Teaching Fellowship Scheme recognises and rewards special contributions to teaching and learning in Higher Education. Nigel has pioneered an innovative Creative Writing programme at the University of Gloucestershire and has for some time been at the forefront of new developments in this discipline. He is editor of Creative Writing: Teaching Theory and Practice, a journal devoted to the theory and practice of Creative Writing pedagogy, and he is Vice-Chair of the National Association of Writers in Education. He was also a member of the working group that drafted the Subject Benchmark and Research Statements for Creative Writing in 2008. The success of Nigel’s approach is evident in the achievement of his students, many of whom have gone on to publish in journals, to win competitions, or to publish collections of poetry. Nigel said: “I’m delighted and honoured to receive a National Teaching Fellowship award. Because the award is intended for the recipient’s future professional development in teaching and learning, I have no doubt that the Fellowship will enhance, enrich and broaden my teaching, which will be of enormous benefit to my current and future students.”
