Student Successes 2017/18

UoG creative writing students have been doing great things this year and have achieved publications and prizes in all three strands. Congratulations to everyone (and if I have missed any successes, please let me know).

Please note – some of you have told me about acceptance for the UoG anthology Singularity. I haven’t included them here as I’d like to get a full list – watch this space!

Prose

MA student Jim Pownall  has published two short stories in magazines: ‘The Imposter ‘(Fake, Wilson Arts Collective Zine) and ‘The Pilgrimage’ (Duet, Pittville Press).

Claire Harrison (2^nd year BA) had a short story published in Fresh Leaves, an anthology of short stories by new writers in 2018; she won an award for being the author of one of the top three stories chosen by the editor/publisher Vine Leaves Publishing. Claire was also winner of 2018 Cheltenham Poetry Festival Slam Story competition.

Carol Hilton (2^nd year BA) also had two stories published in Fresh Leaves; ‘Honey Cake’ and ‘Henry’s Seagull’. ‘Honey Cake’ won the first prize of a £75 Amazon voucher.

Amelia Wreford (MA) has a short story ‘Worm’ – for December issue of  BFS Horizons, which is the official periodical for the British Fantasy Society.

Caroline Juskus (1^st year BA) had a story ‘Ill Winds’ selected for a themed Mslexia issue – a very tough market!

Chloe Forester (3^rd year BA) published a story ‘Isa’ in Novelty magazine.

Daniel Paton (2^nd year BA) was a winner in the Waterloo Festival short story competition. The collection is available as an eBook on Amazon – https://www.amazon.co.uk/dp/B07DP2W22T

Sophie Lay (3^rd year BA) had a  short story ‘Cultivate’ published in Popshot Magazine’s Summer Issue. Sophie also let me know about a group publication in the Lampeter Review later this year. The piece is titled ‘Staying Grounded: Twelve Eyewitness Accounts of the Event’. The students (and staff) included are: Libby Brown, Oli Cowmeadow, Becky Charnock, Chloe Hodgkinson, Tyler Keevil, Sophie Lay, Kerry McDonnell, Holly Naylor, Laurie Parrett, Shannon Storm, Kate Whinnett, and Amy Wright.

Joyce Grant, who is one of our Humber College MA students, published a middle-grade baseball novel, Sliding Home, in April 2018 (publisher: Lorimer Kids & Teens, Canada).

A late addition: Reece McCormack has a story, ‘Something with Miles on it’ accepted for publication by the New England Review; it will feature in either the September or December issue.

Poetry

Ziggy Dicks (MA) has had poetry on the Outlaw Poetry website, contributed to Further into Darkness and Light Anthology (profits for Mind charity), contributed to a forthcoming anthology by Fallen Angel Poetry, and launched Gloucester Poetry Society’s first anthology.

Asha Sutton (1^st year BA) had a poem, ‘We Breathe’ on the webzine I am not a silent poet https://iamnotasilentpoet.wordpress.com/

Caroline Juskus (1^st year BA) also had a poem on I am not a silent poet and is awaiting results of other submissions.

Molly Burnell (1^st year BA)had a poem , ‘A Drop of Darkness’,  published in the January 2018 issue of a print magazine The Dawntreader and a second poem accepted for a later issue.

Jemma O’Donovan (2^nd year BA) had a poem,  ‘Prisoner’, on I am not a silent poet and another poem ‘Glenfiddich’ in Bindweed magazine.

Carol Hilton (2^nd year BA) a poem ‘Empty Nest’ in Snakeskin Poetry Webzine – June/July 2018.

Ross Turner (1^st year BA) has done very well with a group of four poems featured in Sarasvati magazine ( Indigo Dreams Publishing Ltd) and a poem in Snakeskin Poetry Webzine, December 2017.

Bea Hughes (2^nd year BA) had a poem,  ‘Oilseed’, on I am not a silent poet and won the May competition, and publication, at Creative Writing Ink journal with a poem ‘Christmas Morning’.

Dramatic Writing

Domenic Edwards (3^rd year BA) and Daniel Paton (2^nd year BA) will both have plays produced and performed at Stroud Theatre Festival with Smash The Glass theatre company.

 

It is fantastic to see students doing so well in all three strands – keep sending the work out, we are proud of you!
